Unexpected | Week 1
Unexpected is defined in the Oxford American Dictionary as not expected or regarded to happen. It’s when something happens that we can’t foresee happening. Unexpected doesn’t mean not possible. Let’s not get that confusion in our head. If I said that I that I unexpectedly won the beauty contest, that would not be an inaccurate statement. It is not possible to win the contest if you never entered the competition. However, if I go run a mile in under 8 minutes that would be unexpected because I do run sometimes and it would not be totally out of the realm of possibility. We often approach the Bible with the not possible mentality when we should have the, “that was unexpected” mindset. We often forget that Luke 1:37 is in the book.
The Christmas message is full of a lot of the unexpected and some of the not possible. We often focus on the not possible parts of the Christmas story and rightfully so. We love the not possible of the virgin birth. We love the not possible of God becoming flesh. That’s what makes Jesus followers unique if that we serve the God of the not possible. But the exciting thing for me to think about is that we serve a God who is the God of the unexpected as well.
Over this Christmas season we are going to look at unexpected. How it relates to the Christmas story and our lives. I think that we will see that we have been using the not possible where the unexpected should be.
